Volunteers Save the Day at MPL

Friday, July 27th, 2007

When Marathon Public Library Manager, Carol Townsend, injured her back last Saturday, Sande Pedro and Carol Henthorn stepped right up and took over the library for her.  “Carol has enough to worry about,” Sande said. “We want her to be able to relax and get some rest.”

Sande and Carol have volunteered to keep the library open on Mondays and Thursdays from 11:00 to 1:00 so that patrons can continue to borrow books and movies.

Times They “R” a Changing

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

We are pleased to announce that, as of August 1, 2007, some interesting changes will be taking place at the Alpine Public Library. The biggest one of all will be:

EVERY MONTH IS AMNESTY MONTH.

This means that we will no longer charge fines for late materials. If you still feel compelled to make compensation for late materials, please drop a small donation in our donation jar. It will be located at the Circulation Desk. Other voluntary donations will also be welcome.

To help this new arrangement to function smoothly, we will implement a new procedure for overdue materials which will be called the “Four R’s”:

Return your materials within two weeks of their due date

Or

Renew your materials for two weeks, no more than two times for books and no more than one time for movies

Or

Replace the materials, by paying the replacement cost

Or

Relinquish your library privileges.

By heeding these four simple reminders, every month will be amnesty month. For additional information on these changes and other changes we will be implementing, please visit the Alpine Public Library. Feel free to ask one of the librarians about the changes. We will also be handing out fliers explaining the changes in greater details.

“If Wishes Were Fishes…”

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

…Then the Alpine Public Library would have the book or movie that I need in circulation. If there is a material that you would like but do not see on our shelves or in the card catalog, please let us know.

Drop your suggestions for new materials in the Wish Box. It is the blue box next to the card catalog. We are keeping a running list of all the suggestions for new materials we receive. Our goal is to acquire some of the materials suggested. We have already been able to acquire the book Dead Man’s Bones by Susan Wittig Albert. This was one of the first book suggestions placed in the Wish Box.

Thank you very much for the Wish Box suggestions we have already received. If you haven’t made “wish,” by all means do so. You never know, your wish may come true.

New Books

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

Marathon Public Library has received many new books this month. Dan Dailey from Five Owls let us go through boxes of books and pick some for Marathon and Alpine Library. We picked around 135 for MPL and Alpine around 145. Connie and I had a great time picking out books for the children. A volunteer Dimitri Garcia also helped us. Dan says we may go back for more if you want because he will soon be sending the books back. Any volunteers to help? Please contact Carol at MPL. We also received about 50 books at MPL from Steve Griffis. Most of them are non-fiction western. We want to thank Dan and Steve for their wonderful donations to the libraries. Marathon Public Library is a great little library with wonderful community support and it keeps showing.

Marathon Public Library will be closed on Thursday and Friday July 19th and 20th. Will reopen on Monday regular hours 11AM to 5PM.

Thanks, Everyone have a great day,

Carol  MPL

Sustainablility Bibliography

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Would you like to do more to save the earth?  Don’t know where to start?  Then visit the Alpine Public Library*.  We have many books on ecology and conservation of various sorts.  There are even books for little ones concerned about the environment.

Our Sustainability Bibliography takes the guesswork out of trying to find these titles.  Come to the circulation desk and you will find a green folder with a list of the books pertaining to conservation.  In it you will find the titles, call numbers and a brief description of each material.  If you need more help, our friendly staff would be happy to oblige.  Let’s get a little greener together!

*If you would like to have more information on how you can help the Alpine Public Library conserve and recycle, please see the blog posting: R-E-C-Y-C-L-E, Recycle; C-O-N-S-E-R-V-E, Conserve.

Marathon Public Library had it’s last summer reading class on July 11, 2007. The children can continue to read until July 31, 2007 for their points. On August 11, 2007, at 11AM, we will have our award program and party. We want to invite all the parents to come and join the fun. In our last program we colored pictures, had a visit from Pirate D(Dimitri Garcia), Callie Griffis, and Dog Parrot(Darby). Pirate D read “Why pirates don’t change diapers” by Melinda Long and the little pirates colored. We decorated small wood pirate chest and filled them with treadures for all. At the end of the program Captain Steve and Pirate D led us all in a Yo, Ho, Ho pirate song. Hope all you fantastic little pirates return for that special buried treasure for the winner. Come and join the fun at the Marathon Public Library. “Everyone walks the plank to winning.”

Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers who helped with our program: Steve and Arlene Griffis, Callie and Casey Griffis, Dimitri Garcia, Sande Pedro, Linda Spears, Tonya Thurlby,, Nancy Coppola, David Townsend, Wilma Schindeler, Jackie Boyd, and Andre Hinkle.

Moving? – Please Let Us Know

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

The Big Bend is an area of diversity.  There are many long time residents who have lived in the same home for many years.  Others have just moved here.  Others will soon move away.  Still others will take their place.  Some even move back.

If you are one of those moving away or just across town, one of the first things you probably do is complete a change of address with the post office.  Friends, creditors and even your favorite merchants are usually informed of your recent address change.  But, have you thought about the library?

It is our desire to remain in contact with our patrons, even if you are moving across the street.  In this way, we can keep you informed.  You will be able to know at the earliest moment when your reserves are available.  If we have questions, we can contact you in a timely manner.  Even if you are moving a distance, please, let us know.  You never know, we may still need to contact you.  Or, you may move back.

So, if you are moving, please let us know.  If you have changed your telephone number, please let us know.  E-mail us at aplinfo@sbcglobal.net or call 432-837-3590.
